Video Project Review: 7 Deadly Sins

For our final project for Advanced Video and Sound we each needed to film a music video. I decided that a 7 deadly sins themed video would be pretty a cool idea.

Finished Video Project

I didn't have many friends back then, but thankfully, a couple of good people decided to stand in and help me out as actors. My friend Sara did all of the make up and my friend John stood in as the devil. I decided to have the song Hell, from the Squirrel Nut Zippers as the main music piece.

A music video from the 90's that disturbed me as a kid

It was fun to think of ways to kill all of the "sinners". I forget what camera I shot this on, but if I had to guess, I would say it a Panasonic model that I checked out of school. It was also really fun to try and incorporate as many VFX shots as possible to separate myself from my other classmates. I still wasn't too keen on handling cameras and equipment, as my main ambition was to be a VFX artist one day, not a videographer.

Rotoscoping a mask over every frame to turn Envy green

There was one big issue however, I had to shoot the entire video in 2 hours, and some of my friends had to leave early to watch the "the Walking Dead". It was just me and one camera, shooting everything I storyboarded, and I think it worked for the most part. After I was done shooting one of the actresses, I then sent them over to my fathers studio across the house to be shot on a green screen. I figured that extra footage of them as ghost could be used to save my ass if I didn't have enough footage for the edit.

What I could have done better

Some of the shots I took were a bit soft and out of focus. I often think about re-editing this video, but never feel inspired to. I could at this point add better VFX shots, and maybe cause the deaths to be more gruesome. I also really didn't have any idea of what to do with Envy, so we did this sewn up mouth thing that didn't really make much sense. This video isn't portfolio worthy but I still enjoy the idea of what this could have become.
