My obsession with music was a huge part of my childhood, as it is for most people during their formative years. Music defines who you are as a kid. If you like heavy metal, you usually grow your hair out. If you like punk music, you usually wear backward caps and pick up skateboarding. When you think of the 1920s you think of Big Band music. When you think of the 1990's you think of grunge. When you think of the 1960's you think of the hippie movement, Rock 'N Roll, and Folk music. Music is important, and we usually stay trapped in the decade that defined our favorite memories. Here are my top favorite songs of all time. This list was incredibly hard to come up with, but nonetheless, here it is.
Number 10: Simon & Garfunkel, The Sound of Silence
I am a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan. Folk music is my favorite genre of Rock 'n Roll, and Paul Simon is the master of Travis-style guitar picking (nerd alert). I also believe that the 1960s is the greatest decade for Rock music ever! This music brings me back to a time I was never born into. It's just a guitar and two people singing and that's enough for me.
Number 9: The Shins, New Slang
I first heard this song on the Garden State soundtrack, which is one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. I was 18 years old and on a Senior trip to Italy. One of the girls on the trip shared this song with me, and from that moment, I've always associated it with young adulthood and freedom. Another folkish tune, which I seem to gravitate to, this song is somber but happy at the same time, which is how some would describe my personality.
Number 8: Daft Punk, Around the World
Rock isn't the only genre of music I enjoy. This is one of the weirdest music videos I've ever seen. This song amps me up. I can listen to this song on repeat for hours. The baseline is sick, and sometimes there is complexity in simplicity.
Number 7: The Strokes, Last Night
As I type this journal, The Strokes are my favorite band of all time. This usually changes frequently, with The Beatles, and Radiohead.
This song is edgy as hell. When you listen to a song by the Strokes, you can't help but be mesmerized by the battle the two guitarists always seem to be having. This music video screams the 1970s to me. I usually can't even understand what Julian Casablancas is saying most of the time, but I don't need to. I fucking love this song.
Number 6: Radiohead, Decks Dark
What an eerie song this is. When I listen to this song, I am transported to another dimension. This song is surreal, and it takes me to a dark place. It's funny how listening to a depressing song can heal you. This song is my Dark Passenger.
Number 5: Nick Drake, Pink Moon
Here is another Folk Song. I first heard this song in a 1999, Volkswagen commercial. The commercial featured a bunch of teenagers driving to a party with their car top down, looking towards the stars. The teens then get to the party and realize that the journey was even better than the destination. That is quite a life lesson and one that resonated with me, even at an early age. This song represents the innocence of youth.
Number 4: Muse, The Uprising
The Uprising is a song of rebellion. This is a dark song, and I have always gravitated to darkness. Most importantly, this song is sexy as hell.
Number 3: The Smashing Pumpkins, Ava Adore
Another dark song by one of my favorite bands. I saw Ava Adore when I was about 9 years old, and this music video blew me away. I've been obsessed and fascinated with vampires my entire life. Billy Corgan comes off as some Nosferatu being in this music video. This music video was a prelude to how I would be spending my Saturday nights for the next couple of decades. I would also rate this song as one of the sexiest songs I have ever heard. Even though I look wholesome on the inside, this video defines who I actually am on the outside.
Number 2: Radiohead, Talk Show Host
I first heard this song in the movie Romeo + Juliet. Sometimes I drive around in my car listening to this song, and I immediately feel like a badass.
The guitar is perfect, and the baseline punches you in the face. Best song ever... almost.
Number 1: The Strokes, The Adults Are Talking
This is the only song on the list from the last 20 years. I tend to live in the past, but not when it comes to this song. I'm not exactly crazy about the music video, although it does feature baseball. I heard this song in passing and stopped everything I was doing, and then I listened to it again, and again, and again. My favorite song to this point was "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" by Radiohead, but I don't feel like that can be my favorite song anymore, due to reasons I don't want to get into. This song has been a life changer. I never skip it when I hear it come on. The guitar and baseline are simple, but once again effective. This song is the sum of all its parts, each band member contributing just enough to bake a cake of perfection.
