On Tuesday, November 5th, 2024, my aunt Sandra passed away. I wanted to take the time to share some of my favorite memories with my aunt.
As a child, I was very frightened of the Boogeyman. I remember sleeping over at Titi Sandy's house, and at breakfast, Sandy (Lied) told me that she drowned the Boogeyman in her pool. I was so relieved and she was my hero.
My aunt was a teacher at PS: 314, and we managed to weasle me into her class. Although she spent the next 30 years making jokes about how much she sucked as a teacher, she couldn't be farther from the truth. Sandy, you were a fantastic teacher.
I took an Opera class in 4th grade, with Mrs. Lansen. Mrs. Lansen was a very passionate teacher but could be a little stern. My aunt was friends with Mrs. Lansen, and they even carpooled to work. Once again, (Sandy lied), and told me on the phone that she confronted, Mrs. Lansen about how she had been treating me, and threw her out of her moving car, once again, making her my hero.
In the last 15 years or so, Sandy's health had taken a turn for the worst. A couple of years ago, my parents were out of town, and a storm passed by, and I received a call from Sandy, I remember this was odd because we really didn't talk on the phone ever. She was calling to check up on me and see if I needed anything. I remember thinking how cute that was. Sandy couldn't get around very well anymore, and what could she do to help I thought, but then I realized how much it meant to me that someone out there cared enough to call. That small gesture stays with me to this day.
Titi Sandy was funny. She was always willing to take one on the chin just to make us laugh, even if that meant being the butt of the joke. She loved McDonald's, and she loved her reality shows, like Big Brother and Survivor. Every Christmas, she would always enjoy our 12 Days of Christmas tradition, even though she always messed up her part (Once again she would do anything to make us laugh). She was a great mother and a fantastic grandmother and she will be missed by us all. I love you Sandy, and I know you are finally pain-free.
